Sir Nottaguy-Imadad posted here and here about the fun he had and saw at the county fair. This is my story. As he posted, Wednesday is usually the busiest day because of the Rough Truck Competition, and it rained this year. There was lots of mud, and apparently lots of stupid to go with it.
I'm usually posted on the very last driveway to the back, at the first aisle. Directly across from me was an aisle that had already been churned into mud that was ankle deep. (And it's not ALL mud!) The deputy sheriff requested that I not allow anyone down that aisle unless they were already in 4 wheel drive. I told him I would do my best, but there was no accounting for the number of stupid drivers. (He laughed!)
The first driver that was determined to pull down that aisle was a young guy in a Civic. I told him not to, but he did anyway. When he finally finished sliding, he was inches away from hitting a large SUV. He yelled at me for not telling him how bad it was.
The next driver was in a jeep. Unfortunately, he didn't listen to me about putting it in 4WD, instead he gunned the engine. Apparently, speed makes up for traction??? Not so. He turned sideways and stayed sideways over the edge of the hill and out of my sight.
One of the last drivers to disregard my warning was a redneck in a white pickup. He slipped and slid and wound up nose to nose with another vehicle. The deputy was called to deal with him.
Then there was the charming older gentleman who decided to turn up the hill beside me in his beautiful white Caddy 5 minutes after it had finished raining. I told him that the hill was too steep for his car, but he said he needed a close parking space. As he slid sideways, he gave me an evil look. After he fought his car into control, and rolled back down to the driveway, he rolled down his window, and wanted to know why I didn't tell him that the grass was wet and slick.
I really do enjoy working the fair. I enjoy doing anything I can to help raise funds for our missionaries. But I think I'm starting to get a little jaded with the stupidity of the average fair goer. There are times when the old customer service adage "The customer is always right." is so dead wrong as to be a lie!
