Somebody's having a "duh" moment...

I have worked in banking for over 14 years, in several different areas of the bank. I thought I had heard all of the dumb comments that could be made. (Like the college student who seriously thought that just because he still had checks in his checkbook he could continue writing them even though his account had been closed for repeated overdrafts!) But I think Monday's phone conversation has to be the topper!

I answered the phone and a frantic sounding woman told me that she had a friend who needed a checking account desperately, but then stated that he had no picture ID, and no way to get one. (RED FLAGS!) I told her that without a picture ID, we would not be able to open an account. Then she said she wanted to make him a signer on her account. Once again, I explained that for security reasons, he would still need to present a picture ID. Then she said that she thought all of this could be done over the phone and how was I supposed to see his ID anyway. Once again I explained the security reasons. She then wanted to know what kind of a bank we were anyway!

Some people just really don't get it (or maybe they just really don't want to!)!!!!

When I worked as a teller, we had a lady who was very similar to your student, except her account was still open and she would come in and ask for her balance, which we would preface by telling here that it did not reflect any outstanding charges. As soon as she left the bank, then she'd go and spend on the account and the next morning her account would be overdrawn. So, in she'd come again and yell at us for telling her an "incorrect" account balance the day before - so, after about two instances of this, we were no longer allowed to tell her her balance. Thank goodness, she soon took her money and went elsewhere to harass them!! So, I can definitely relate to the dumb things you hear!!
