Today I had to take Mom to the Veteran's Clinic in Columbus. Jessica and Eva went along to help me out. (I'm having a particular issue with the opthamologist.)
At Mom's first appointment, in the waiting area, there was a 40+ year old Marine Veteran who struck up a conversation with Mom. He asked about her years of service (2 years), what division she was in (Navy Women), what type of work she did (Store Keeper 2nd Class). He asked how many times she got lost in New York City (too many to count). And then he did the most special thing of all--he thanked Mom for being willing to go into service at a time when most women wouldn't. He thanked her for all of the stuff that she made available to him from the supplies so that he could go do his job. Mom was out of the service before this man was born, but his thankfulness made her day!
After all of the appointments were completed, Eva and I were waiting near the front of the clinic while Mom and Jessica went to the little girls' room. We were sitting right across from Client Services, and one of the clerks came around the desk and got down to Eva's level (in the stroller) and said "I justs loves me some white baby! She is sooo beee-yutiful!" (The clerk was black and had the most delicious inner-city accent!) She talked with Eva for a few minutes and was very pleased when Eva gave her a high-five!
Sometimes you meet the most interesting people when you least expect it!

That's the beauty of dedicated servicemen and women - they don't look at it as "her" war era and "his" war era. Everyone is on the same team, and everyone is important.
