In The ER, AGAIN

Just as I was getting ready to get into my nightgown and climb under the covers, I received a call from the nursing center. This was around 9 p.m. (Yes, I'm an old fogey, and go to bed early!)

When Mom fell in August, a hematoma (large puffy bruise) developed on her head.  She's as bad as a 2 yr. old with a scab, she just can't keep her hands off of it!  She's torn the skin so badly, that even if the hematoma ever goes away, she will have some massive scarring.

Last night, she evidently had been rubbing and picking at it, and had it bleeding profusely when the nurse came to give her the night medicines. With two nurses working on it and putting pressure on the spot, they still couldn't get it to stop bleeding.  AND one of the nurses noticed that there seemed to be a membrane pulsing with every spurt of blood.  They were concerned that they may be dealing with an external aneurysm, so they decided to send her to ER to be evaluated and to get the bleeding stopped.

Finally, by 11 p.m., the bleeding had completely stopped, and we were just waiting for the results from the CT scan and ultrasound. I was trying NOT to go to sleep because I was positive I would just slide right out of the chair and land with a THUD on the floor.  All of a sudden, Mom started hallucinating.  She was "hearing" someone chanting her name and telling her to give herself up.  It took a little while to calm her, but shortly after that the doctor came in with the results of the tests.

According to both scans, there is nothing wrong with her brain.  No swelling.  No bleeding.  No signs of trauma.  This is great news, but it still leaves me very puzzled as to why the changes have come on so suddenly.

I have an appointment to take her to the VA clinic in Columbus on Thursday.  I'm going to press her doctor about having a neurologist to assess her while we are there.  If there's nothing physically wrong with her mind, then I need their help in keeping her calm.

She was finally released to go back to the nursing center about 1 a.m.  I got home and in bed about 1:45 a.m.  Needless to say, I'm tired.  I'm thinking that there will definitely have to be a nap today before I pick up David Riley and Eva.
