A Word to the Whys

As you may have gathered, this post is going to involve my grandson, David Riley. He is a typical 5 year old. He is FULL (yea, to overflowing) with questions, most of them starting with "Papa, why..." The following conversation took place in the car Sunday morning, as we were driving to General Conference:

DR: Papa, why are rocks hard?
Papa: Well, God made them that way.
DR: But, why?
Papa: So that you wouldn't try to eat them.
DR: Most rocks are dirty, Papa, why would anyone try to eat one?
Papa: Maybe they are really hungry.
DR: OHHH! Papa, why is it so foggy outside?
Papa: Because the air is colder than the ground and when the cold air hits the warm ground it makes fog.
DR: Why does it do that, Papa?
Papa: Because when cold air meets hot air it makes a heavy cloud of water. If it's cold outside and you blow your warm breath it makes a cloud too.
DR: Oh, so the ground is breathing on the air! Papa, why don't cars and trucks hook together like trains?
Papa: Because trains hook together so that all of the cars get to the same place at the same time. Cars and trucks don't always want to go to the same place, so they drive by themselves.
DR: Papa, trucks and cars can't drive themselves, people have to drive them! Papa, why are tires heavy?
Papa: Because tires are made out of rubber and steel wires and those are heavy materials.
DR: But can't they make them like balloons so they can float?
Papa: Balloons would break if a car used them.
DR: Papa, why does the steering wheel move while you're driving?
Papa: Because the steering wheel is helping me keep the car going straight. It makes the front wheels turn to follow the road.
DR: Okay. Hey, Papa...

Ross and I thought that once we had gone through this stage with our girls that it was done, and it would be their turn. Somebody forgot to put in the "Grandparent's Manual" that you have to keep your quick wit and encyclopedic knowledge fresh for the grandkids, too!!!

I'm glad that Ross is so good with the questions, because I was too busy trying not to laugh out loud!

Well, have a wonderful day, and remember to do some quick studying -- you may have to give a quick answer to a 5 year old!

ROFL whatever will Dad say now if Riley pouts and doesn't want to eat what's in front of him, and Dad brings in a bowl of rocks from the alley?

Your guess is as good as mine, Liz! But knowing your dad, he'll come up with something that will get Riley's attention!

Although, about the only things that Riley really balks at eating are tomatoes and onions. He's a pretty good eater!
