Leave Me In My Own Little World, PLEASE!

After the day I have had today at work, I think it best that I find a hole, crawl into it, and pull the opening closed after me.

It is not a full moon. (And I don't care what you may believe, there is truth to that old wives' tale!!)

I know I wasn't on any drugs (although I probably would have coped with things better had I been!).

First thing this morning we were all notified that we were no longer allowed to bring books to read during down-time. (Evidently two of the tellers were caught reading {by a vice president no less} and ignoring customers in the lobby.)

The next announcement was that cell phones were not to be in our windows at all during working hours. (Two tellers were captured on video talking/texting on their cell phones while waiting on customers.)

Now, I don't know about most of you, but I was brought up with a work ethic that said you are being paid to do your job, not entertain yourself. So, even though I do enjoy reading when I get a few spare minutes, it wasn't a big deal to me not to be able to read. I have been known to answer the occasional text during work hours, but NEVER when there were any customers even in the lobby. (Usually I take a bathroom break.) So, once again, the only issue I had with the cell phone rule was due to the bad health of my mother and needing to be available to the nursing center staff.

What really blew me away, was the response of the rest of the staff!!!! You would have thought there was a boat load of 5 year olds loose behind the teller line from the amount of pouting/fussing/stomping/slamming that was going on.

REALLY??? Are you truly over 18 and legal to be working??? And you don't think that management has the right to dictate limitations during working hours???

I finally told one teller (who had been to my cubicle 3 times to complain) that if she said one more thing to me about it before I left for the day, that management would have to write me up for abuse of a co-worker. I've never been fond of the idea of enclosed teller cubicles, but TODAY I think I would have welcomed one. (And soundproofing would have been nice, too!)

As a child, I was not so happy about the lessons my mom, dad, and step-mom gave me in ethics, but as an adult, parent, and grandparent I have found them to be invaluable. I have tried to pass these same lessons on to my children and grandchildren and in every Sunday School class I have taught. Being a good worker is so much more than just showing up on time and doing your job!!!

What kind of work ethics do you see around you???

Thankfully my boss is fine with me calling or texting while on the job. I'm even allowed to take a nap, and have multiple lunch breaks.

:) sahm is the best!

Wellll...when I worked at the library, the board found it necessary to institute a dress code as the younger employees were really pushing the envelope on decency and still some of them had to be called into the office and be given the guidelines personally and STILL they pushed the envelope!
They would sit on the counters if no one was around. Well, anyone that they thought was of importance. I never ceased to be amazed at their nonchalance about their conduct as a library employee.
And that is all I have to say about that. :-)

We had someone who was texting, while parts were falling off the assembly line at his feet. You would think tat the clang of the parts hitting the floor would bring him out of it. His group leader had to tell him to put the phone away.
