Today at work, I overheard a couple of young college fellows talking about an experiment that they have been doing. It kinda peaked my interest, and has made me think a little....
They are trying to invent an engine/transmission unit that can run on steam. (Now they didn't say whether this was for a car, boat, train, tractor, or whatever.) Their idea is to use corn or soy beans (like the pellet stoves) to heat a closed steam system (similar to a radiator) to run the engine/transmission unit.
I understand that steam engines are nothing new, but a closed steam system would resolve the issue of stopping to refill the water tank. And using corn or soy beans to heat the steam would be more economical and lighter-weight than wood or coal. If they found a way to recycle the smoke/exhaust (in a type of turbo unit) they could probably double the power.
Sounds kind of interesting, doesn't it??
