In The Van

Last night on our way home from the Sweet Corn Festival, the van was pretty well packed.  The very back seat had a teenage boy, David Riley, a 9 yr. old girl, and an 18 yr. old girl, the next seat had the mom of the 9 yr. old. and another mom with a 6 yr. old, the next seat had the mother of the teenage boy and another lady, the front bench had two older gentlemen, and the front was my husband driving and me riding shotgun. (This is important to know, trust me!)

Despite the fact that it was after 9:30 p.m., and everybody had worked their tails off, there was a lot of conversation going on in all of the seats. The teenage boy was probably the ONLY quiet person in the van.  He was exhausted! DR was probably doing the majority of the talking in the very back.  (It really wouldn't have mattered where he was, he would probably have been doing the majority of the talking.)

All of a sudden the mom of the 9 yr. old says to the back row, "Haven't you ever heard that silence is golden?"

DR:  "I didn't know that gold was so fragile that one word could break it."  Instant comeback!!

Thanks goodness, the mom is not really good at getting sarcasm, however I quickly jumped in with a correction that sarcastic wit late at night is not appreciated.  DR clammed up and promptly went to sleep.

I tried very, Very, VERY hard not to chuckle the rest of the way home!!!

The quick thinking wit that he has acquired in his 10 short years amazes me and occasionally leaves me speechless.  Thank you, Papa aka Gweag aka Sir Nottaguy-Imadad!
