The Quivering Dog Dilemma

We have a dog.

He is a Rat Terrier.

We got him from the pound as a rescue.

He is absolutely TERRIFIED of loud noises and flashes of light, ie:  thunder storms or fire works.

Yesterday we had several thunder storms and then we had another really bad one during the night. (Bad enough that we lost a branch from the tree in front of our house.)

Under normal circumstances, Sparky, sleeps on the foot of our bed.  Sometimes when he is particularly scared or nervous, he will creep up the bed and try to sleep on our pillows or our heads.  Yesterday must have really driven him over the edge.  He wouldn't even get on the bed.  He cowered under it ALL! NIGHT! LONG!

My husband has worked out a system of giving the dog a dose of children's benedryl (recommended by our vet) to help Sparky be a little more calm during a storm, but last night Sparky was determined to not even come out from under the bed for that.  Therefore, he quivered under the bed.  We have hard wood floors, so the sound of him quivering is fairly loud.

I finally tuned him out and went to sleep.  The hubby turned over on his side and eventually got to sleep.  Don't know if Sparky ever went to sleep.
