Yes, Indeedy!!

Well, I don't normally enjoy working on Saturdays, but I'll tell you, Folks, I'm GLAD that tomorrow is my normal Saturday to work!!! When I resort to telling my mother to grow-up and be responsible for her own diet, it is definitely time for me to go back to work!!

I just had the 10 billionth conversation with my mother about why she can't eat 500 grams of carbs in one breakfast and SHE STILL DOESN'T GET IT!!!!! Talk about frustrating!

I can explain the same thing over and over to a child and not get irritated by it, but when I have to do this with an adult my head explodes into tiny little fragments!!!!

Do any of you have any idea how tough it is to keep an 86 year old diabetic from eating more than 35 grams of carbs in a breakfast??? Here's what it should look like:
1/2 cup dry cereal = 15 grams
1/2 cup milk = 5 grams
1/2 cup juice = 15 grams
1 cup of decaf coffee = 0 grams

What does she want??? All of the above plus:
2 pancakes = 40 grams
2 tbls. sugar-free syrup = 10 grams
1/2 blueberries = 20 grams

And then she wants 3 graham crackers with a smear of peanut butter on them about 1 1/2 hours later. (Read 15 grams)

And then she wants a Glucerna shake about 1/2 hour after that. (17 grams)

And, and, and!!!

No matter how much I talk to her and show her the numbers she doesn't understand that everything that goes in her mouth affects the sugar levels of her body!!!

Yes, I'm frustrated and I'm ranting! Now, I'm going to go take a nice, hot shower, and then hide for a while.

Try gradually introducing more protein and less carby stuff into her diet. The more carbs she eats, the more she craves--it's a vicious cycle. If I have protein for breakfast (eggs, ham, leftover chicken, etc.), I can go four hours with no hunger pangs. If I ate what you described, I'd be ravenous within half an hour.
Try thinking of her as a child-again--due the respect of an adult, but perhaps retreating into childhood as she ages. It's so hard to know how to deal with our aging relatives, isn't it.

Theresa,
I'm in the process of moving stuff from my old web page to my low carb blog. If you need recipes or tips, you can still access the web page at

Click on low carb recipes, or low carb for general information.
Hope this helps.
