In A Multitude of Counselors There Is Wisdom...

Okay, Folks--HELP!!!! I need to pick your brains.

Here's the basic issue: My Mother (86 years old) has a multitude of health issues: Parkinson's Disease, high blood pressure, very high cholesterol, high tri-glycerides, Osteoporosis, TIA Syndrome (mini-strokes), and now we have added Type 2 Diabetes (insulin resistance). We are already seeing some of the damage from the diabetes with eye problems and nerve damage in her feet.

We have met with a dietitian, a diabetic counselor, and a multitude of doctors. They are all agreed, the worst issue she has to deal with is the diabetes. Diet control is an absolute.

How far do you go with controlling what an 86 year old eats???

This is not a rhetorical question. I really need to hear what people outside of myself are thinking.

You are definitely in a tight spot!

My grandma is 76 and was dignosed with diabetes when she was in her 50s. She did an excellent job of controlling her diet and monitoring her insulin until my granddad died ten years ago. Now she has a stubborn, "I'm on my way to dying anyway, I might as well enjoy good food on my way out" attitude. She has a point, but then there is the family that is trying to help her be healthy and truly enjoy her life...

I guess I don't have a lot of wisdom or advice, but a lot of empathy - I know the dilemma of trying to take care of a sassy someone who doesn't really want it. ;)

Having a diabetic daughter myself I must at least leave some food for thought...Have seen several cases of type one and two diabetics with poor diabetes management and the end result is far worse than the changes you would have to make to your daily routine. Regardless of age, you don't want to see a loved family member suffering and knowing you could have done something to help prevent it. I have met her and want to keep her around a long time :) Praying for her and God bless your family :)
